And knowing the difference will save you time, money, and a lot of frustration.
I hear it all the time.
Someone jumps on Facebook Marketplace, spots a set of shelves for $80, and figures it's pretty much the same as what we sell. Maybe a bit flimsy, but shelving is shelving, right?
Wrong.
That assumption is probably the thing that frustrates me most in this business. Because it's not just wrong, it actually costs people money in the long run.
So let me break it down properly.
Weight Ratings Actually Mean Something
The number one thing people skip past when buying shelving is the weight rating. And I get it, it sounds like fine print. But it's not.
Here's what the numbers actually mean:
•         200kg rated shelving = light duty. Fine for boxes of documents or light gear.
•         300kg rated shelving = medium duty. Solid for most garage and shed use. This is what we sell as our general range.
•         500kg rated shelving = heavy duty. Built for serious loads, tools, equipment, workshop use.
Now here's the problem.
A lot of sellers out there label their 200kg shelving as "heavy duty." It's not. It's the lightest stuff on the market, dressed up with a big claim.
We don't do that. Our 300kg range is medium duty. Our 500kg range is heavy duty. We're straight-up about it because if you're loading tools, camping gear, tubs of pool chemicals, or anything with real weight, you need to know what you're actually buying.

What Cheap Shelving Actually Looks Like After 6 Months
Cheap shelves usually look fine in the photo. Same shape, same colour, similar size. But there are a few things you won't notice until you've had them for a few months.
•         The uprights start to bow under load.
•         The shelf levels flex when you put weight across the span.
•         The connectors loosen over time, especially if the shelves are moved or adjusted.
•         The coating chips, and from there rust isn't far away.
That's not a hypothetical. That's what I hear from customers who've been through the cheap version and are now looking for something that actually holds up.
I also had a customer recently who used to fit out commercial warehouses for a living. He stood there in my shed for a fair while, looked over the shelving properly, and walked away satisfied. When someone with that level of experience in racking and storage says your product's solid, that means something.
The Marketplace Comparison Problem
People see cheaper shelving on Marketplace and compare it to ours. I understand why they do it. But it's not an apples-for-apples comparison.
The cheaper units are a different weight rating. Different steel thickness. Different build quality. You can't compare a 200kg shelf to a 300kg shelf just because they're both labelled "shelving."
Plenty of customers come to us after realising that. They bought cheap, it didn't hold up, and now they want the real thing.
We're also consistently told we're cheaper and better than Bunnings. That's not something I advertise. It's just what people tell me when they've checked both.
A Story That Stuck With Me
Last week I got a call from a woman whose parents had bought shelving from me a while back. They referred her. She and her partner had just moved into a new house and needed to fit out the shed.
I went around that morning, had a look at the space, threw out a few ideas, talked through what would work best for their setup and told her about the bundle we had going. They were happy with the plan.
When she asked when I could do the install, I told her I could do it that afternoon.
She was pretty surprised by that.
I went back that arvo, put it all together, and by the end of the day they had a fully fitted shed ready to load up. She couldn't believe it had gone from the initial call to a completed install in one day.
That's the kind of result that happens when you stop putting it off and just make the call.
The "I'll Do It One Day" Problem
I've had so many people tell me they need to get shelving "one day."
One day turns into six months. Six months turns into another year of stepping over stuff, not being able to find anything, and avoiding the shed altogether.
The shed doesn't sort itself. But it also doesn't have to be a huge job.
Most people are shocked at how quick it goes once the shelves are up. You put them together, start stacking, and before you know it the place actually looks like somewhere you'd want to spend time. That's what I hear from almost every customer. "I should've done this sooner."

What to Look For When Comparing Shelving
If you're shopping around, here's what actually matters:
•         Weight rating — not what the label says, but what the actual spec sheet shows.
•         Steel gauge — thicker steel means more rigidity and longer life.
•         Adjustability — fixed shelves are limiting. Adjustable beams let you change the layout as your needs change.
•         Stability — does it wobble or brace properly? Check the uprights.
•         Warranty — cheap shelving rarely comes with one.
